Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was a textbook example of financial execution that made and broke the market in the last quarter. The chipmaking titan announced a monstrous $22.36 billion in Q2 net profit, a huge 77.4% YoY jump, smashing revenue and margin guidance, all backed by the booming global AI market.

That great news would be only a catalyst for the biggest single-day point crash in record history on Taiwan’s Stock Exchange - TAIEX.

TSMC’s investors were not impressed by the revenue crush; they were fixated on the huge capital expenditure plan. TSMC is expanding abroad with a 2026 capital spend of more than $60bn, showing structural long-term free cash flow pressure due to higher production costs. TSMC is more than 40% of the total weight of the TAIEX, thus a localised value distortion turned into a market crash.

The global institutional investors were “tired” of AI, and were steadily rotating capital from tech stocks that had gone too far. They aggressively sold TSMC stock throughout the day; the automated sell-off turned into a “FOMO” sell-off by retail on margin, and then held a chain reaction which bootstrapped the sell-off of other tech exposures on the Taipei market.
