Web performance monitor site Downdetector began to report an unexpected surge of complaints around 10:00 am EDT (7:30 pm IST) as a wave of user reports rapidly climbed to more than 35,000 in the US alone in just a few minutes. Reports also started piling up worldwide, with thousands more submitted in the UK, Canada, India and Singapore.
The technical hiccup seemed to have hit the platform the same way on every interface. Downdetector analytics indicated that just less than half of users—44% to be exact—went through massive breakages in the mobile app; 30% called in frozen home feeds and timelines; and a further 15% were unable to access the desktop site at all.
Crazy, wasn’t X the only big one that fubar’d on Monday? Web infrastructure and cybersecurity bigshot Cloudflare has recorded spurious error rates and latency spikes across multiple services at roughly the same time, coinciding with small bursty outages on other popular platforms, like Reddit, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. Though Cloudflare didn’t specifically point out X, its sustained lag was the result of some coordination.
As the main feed remained locked, people rushed to alternate networks like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky to share memes and confirm the digital blackout. A multi-hour outage on a network that calls itself the world’s real-time go-to for news has major economic implications for digital marketers, journalists and brands that rely on real-time communication.
