The 2022 success of La Albiceleste clung heavily to the explosiveness and touchline-wards width of Ángel Di María. His retirement in front of the 2026 FIFA World Cup forced his manager, Lionel Scaloni, to really rethink his tactics. Instead of a like-for-like replacement for a no-substitutes left-footed winger, the Argentine manager has shrewdly opted for a structurally fluid tactical scheme centred on a hyper-technical, “four-midfielder” engine room.

Without him in 2022's campaign, Di María was the vertical form the Argentine backline could be stretched out into. In his absence, Scaloni has reshaped Argentina into a shape that fluctuates between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 diamond.

The tactical coup begins in the centre with a triangle, or diamond, of De Paul, Fernández and Mac Allister, after which the ball is passed to either Thiago Almada or 12-year-old Nicolás Paz. They attack not through individual wingers but with quick, short, sharp passing triangles in the centre. This formation proves deadly for the opposition.

Reinventing Width and Supporting Messi Without Di María to help make space wide, the responsibility of creating width falls on the overlapping full-backs, Nahuel Molina and Facundo Medina, who got up on high positions and stretched the opponent with their aggressive runs to create space in the centre.

It is in precisely those pockets that the ageing Messi can dictate the tempo. Scaloni has moved all of the imagination to the centre of the field, preventing Messi from being siphoned off by serious defensive back-popping – setting him to be a pure first-rate playmaker who throttles in at the eleventh hour to complete a move.

In that period, Scaloni was able to defy the “defending champion's curse” and instead create a highly flexible, possession-oriented juggernaut that was going to survive the period tournaments.
