In today’s business world, a product recall is the stuff of nightmares. Issues with a product come in many forms; many can be handled quietly or without fanfare, and most can be fixed. Catastrophic releases are rare, yet they do happen quite often, and when they do can have crushing financial consequences.
The biggest recalls in today’s business world inflict an immediate, high-level impact on a company’s rigorous financials, but they also lead to brand identity damage and intense regulatory scrutiny. In short, one of the biggest recalls in automotive and technology history didn’t just affect the balance sheet for one quarter; it reshaped it forever.
The automotive and technology industries provide us with some of the biggest notes in history. We’re seeing the biggest recall in history, which is all to do with faulty Takata airbags. These airbag inflators weren’t safe because they could splatter lethal shrapnel. And the issue spanned more than 100 million cars as the company breathed its last, making its recall the most expensive ever. The recall was over $24 billion per annum. The technology company Samsung had recalled all its 2016 flagship Galaxy Note 7 phones. The phones had batteries that were not working properly; thus, the phones started to burn. The recall led to all flights being banned, and the company lost $5.3 billion.
Think product recalls only occur in tech and the automobile industry. Think again. In 2004, Merck recalled one of its blockbuster painkillers, Vioxx – voluntarily. Vioxx had clinical data linking the drug to heart attacks and strokes. Merck switched it off. The recall has had catastrophic consequences for the pharmaceutical industry. They lost $8.5 bn through legal settlements, government fines, and lost revenue.
Recalls are costly in many ways, and this makes large recalls even more costly. The immediate grindlow derives from the cost of reverse supply chains, class action lawsuits, and devaluation of the entity's stock. Across the board, the loss in engineering talent who could be using their time creating themed product innovations is abysmal, on account of the recall cost. And in this respect, and across other metrics, the largest and most well-known recall events demonstrate that any kind of quality assurance cut is costly. You might recall the popular refrain, "Get it right the first time," and it is absolutely the orthodox business approach.
