For decades, families in rural India have cooked with traditional biomass fuels such as firewood and dung cakes, resulting in a public-health catastrophe. Daily use of traditional Chulhas exposes women to high levels of Household Air Pollution (HAP) which emit high concentrations of fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide. Breathing in these pollutants is, health-wise, equivalent to smoking hundreds of cigarettes per day and has been associated with a high prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pulmonary tuberculosis, and acute respiratory infections in women and young children.

‘HP Gas’ as an experienced distributor of LPG, helped catalyze and accelerate this change by leveraging the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to sensitize and convert the cook-accused into consumers, moving it inside the network strategy and GMP language. The impact was far greater than expected in terms of the reach and individual health, including setting the stage for a measurable reduction in respiratory and other health-related diseases from HAP and cataracts. The impact on a gross, measurable scale is reflected as a plethora of new or experienced complaints related to chronic wheezing, chronic shortness of breath, and many other diseases, which they were never exposed to.

The potential health and economic benefits of adopting clean cooking fuels can be weighed without risking the neglect of women's financial inclusion. The implementation of LPG subsidies linked to bank accounts has increased access to banking for millions of rural Indian women. For instance, under the One Time Registration (OTR) scheme of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme for free LPG subsidies managed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, a swarm of call-bots calling the PMUY helpline regularly was found to be assisting thousands of women and their families in availing free LPG subsidies under the PMUY scheme. However, the effects of food insecurity and of switching from biomass to cleaner fuels on women's gut microbiota in India are unknown. Little is known about the gut microbiota profiles of women cooking with traditional biomass stoves in comparison to those cooking with clean fuels. Thus, regular menstrual samples of 50 rural women sustainability and health outcomes in eastern India. This transition also impacts financial inclusion, as linking LPG subsidies to bank accounts under the PMUY program has reportedly increased access to banking for millions of rural women.

Understanding the health impacts of PMUY from an HP Gas infrastructure perspective provides a perspective on the importance of energy access to public health equity. Addressing the challenges of sustained consumption in light of elevated global crude price shocks and rural household budget constraints, HP Gas remains a cornerstone policy for clean cooking gas. It is one of the most effective strategies for converting an energy supply chain into an instrument for rural human development, gender autonomy, and overcoming the legacy of indoor air pollution.
