After four years with Air India, aviation veteran quits full-time executive role to become non-executive director at his home country's flag carrier.
Air New Zealand has added former Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson to its Board of Directors. The New Zealand-born airline veteran will be added jointly with former chief financial officer of the carrier, Robert McDonald. They will take their seats on 24 September, subject to their election by the airline’s shareholders at the Annual Shareholders' Meeting.
Air New Zealand Chairman John Bjelke Haq said the addition of Wilson to the board after its resignation as CEO would put highly experienced industry professionals back in the company. Wilson left his post in 2017 after a transformational four-year reign at Air India after its recent privatization through sale to the Tata Group. He was instrumental in merging four airlines of the group into one, rewiring its core operational systems, expanding and modernizing its fleet and starting a range of infrastructure projects including the largest aviation training academy in South Asia.
Before heading Air India, Wilson worked across the Singapore Airlines Group for more than 20 years and was notably the founding CEO of budget carrier Scoot. Wilson has set out his plans to “reposition himself as someone who works part-time as an executive, while providing non-executive governance, and applying my extensive knowledge as a consultant and mentor, to the airlines of the world.”
For his home country's flag carrier, his experience in fleet expansion, low-cost airlines and global network strategy, will come at a time of major operational setbacks such as delays in delivery of new aircraft, ongoing pressure on the engine supply chain, and the impact of rising fuel prices amid geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.
