As N Chandrasekaran says no to a third term, the Tata Group readies for a smooth transition to seal a watershed decade of structural change and growth.

MUMBAI , The story of a decade long transformation in Indian corporate history will reach an end.Natarajan Chandrasekaran has declared that he will not be seeking a third term as Chairman of Tata Sons after a decade of aggressive expansion, rationalisation and strategic pivots. The current term of the Chairman ends on February 20, 2027 and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has now set up a five-member committee as per Article 118 to look for his successor.

Assuming virtual control in 2017 during a period of extreme boardroom uncertainty, the first non Parsi executive chairman of the holding company, Chandrasekaran took the reins of the conglomerate and ushered it into a new era. He cut debt, simplified ways of holding cross-links between the companies, and reduced bureaucratic inefficiencies, creating a leaner organisation with a sharper focus on capital efficiency in major companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel and TCS.

Besides making balance sheet repairs, Chandrasekaran’s legacy will hinge on bold bets that were forward looking. The group in his tenure re-acquired the flagship carrier Air India, helped kick off the multibillion dollar semiconductor manufacturing drive in Gujarat and Assam and moved into electronics, electric vehicles and battery gigafactories. Chandrasekaran said not to delay reappointment because of a board stalemate lasting months that did not yield unanimous approval. He said that institutional clarity is needed as significant capital expenditure plans get underway and urged the board to make an early decision.

The new chairman will inherit a modern, but execution challenged empire in the realms of nascent high-tech ventures, integration of aviation and changing macro dynamics. With Bombay House moving ahead, Chandrasekaran is taking a huge fight on a resilience built on scale, tech and long-term vision.
