Twelve years after defining Bollywood's fearless anti-neighbor hero, Deol embraces his own legacy to illustrate that the over-capacity world we live in truly requires empathy not rage.

For decades, Indian cinemas have assigned Sunny Deol the role of the single-issue hero, the righteous, anti-neighbor action star who uproots hand-pumps and silences the world in likes of thunderous yells. In the popular Gadar franchise as Tara Singh, he has become a symbol-figurative and almost mythical force of righteous fury and invincible nationalistic pride.

Deol’s first film as Sikandar Mirza, a family man caught up in India’s Partition is a break from the usual fanciful saviors he’d portrayed. It becomes evident when people save you by sheer physical prowess; not in what you do, but who you are, and where you come from. He shows his softer side on camera with subtlety and vulnerability, letting his eyes on hold and his fists speak out of him.

This transition is a welcome one and immune to the banal narrative of Partition becoming a stage for a high-octane retaliation to fellow countrymen. Batwara 1947 tells the story of formation of communal unity, shared grief and human warmth between two characters played by Shabana Azmi and Preity Zinta. Coming opposite the deeply grounded Azmi, Deol shows that on the big, black screen true strength is not so much about defeating an enemy but about choosing compassion over bias in a world that is shaking apart.

In an age in which the overwhelming spectacle of trailer trailers has become near synonymous with mainstream action films, Deol's performance is an occasional but satisfying reminder of the depth of his underappreciated dramatic chops. In opting for compassion over vengeance, he not only turns his whole on-screen legacy on its head, but delivers an even more powerful and relevant message for today's audiences that humanity is our greatest weapon against division.
