The error resulted in firings of executives, temporary store closures for sensitivity training and a permanent damage to brand loyalty.

Starbucks Korea's operating results for the second quarter plunged into a loss 18.4 billion won ($13.4 million) from a 40.3 billion won profit during the same period a year ago, according to the coffee chain's operator SCK Company. Starbuck's operating results have been profitable for a decade and a half now but show a different picture lately, with the company's 49 new outlets in the country resulting in over 2,185 stores. The company's physical expansion in Korea seems to have ring-fenced it from the hard hit chain's recent slowdown. However, this seems to have been insufficient to stop the coffee giant's operating results squeezing into the red as customers have apparently stopped coming into the stores in droves.

The marketing stunt quickly ran aground. The phrase wording evoked the military crackdown, and the backlash was so strong the company was put on the boycott hit list, had a leadership apology from the parent group, replaced the CEO, and sent the entire public employee training cohort to talk about the history and importance of social sensitivity in public calm, abruptly shutting down the largest number of stores nationwide, more than 2,000 to a half day.

Net sales declined 6.1 percent year over year to 747.3 billion won. The relative growth of store expenses compounded by a dropping margin eroded part of the sales margin under a burgeoning store network, and the parent company Emart reported a consolidated operating loss of 43 billion won for the quarter.

In addition, it wants to prevent further incidents due to service failures, which means developing comprehensive content validation systems that include AI validation and a content check list, and it will be necessary for Starbucks Korea to rebuild long-term consumer trust and establish effective governance to recover channel economics and overcome the hurdle of restoring profitability.
