New Zealand confirms first highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu case after infected migratory brown Skua is found on a Wellington beach.

New Zealand will now record its first ever case of the H5N1 highly pathogenic bird flu after a dead infected migratory seabird washed up on a beach in Wellington. The dead animal, a brown skua (Stercorarius Antarcticus), was found at Petone Beach and tested positive for the globally circulating H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b strain of bird flu. And following confirmation from the laboratory of New Zealand Animal Health Service, Health Minister Andrew Hoggard announced that there was no evidence of mass die-offs in wildlife and the virus was not found in domestic poultry.

However, this highly virulent strain of virus will cause a serious ecological problem in New Zealand, which has a highly isolated biodiversity that has evolved for millions of years without native land mammals.

Many of New Zealand’s bird species have evolved as they no longer have any natural predators, many species are flightless and ground nesting, and so are highly vulnerable to expand the rapid spread and high severity of virus such as H5N1.The Department of Conservation has already stepped in and taken preventative measures to protect the country’s core breeding populations of five of New Zealand’s most endangered bird species, including the Kakapo and flightless Takahe.

Nevertheless, from a health risk perspective, the risk of transmission to people is very low. H5N1 rarely infects people, unless they are in long-term contact with animals with heavy infections. Commercial poultry and egg sales are not being affected, however it is still recommended to not touch dead or sick wildlife, and to report any unusual number of deaths.
