How Yayoi Kusama turned her lifelong battle with mental illness into a forward thinking aesthetic of infinite patterns and her personal pathological dysphoria into a pop culture icon.
Polka dots were never forever running pop culture icons when Yayoi Kusama was a child in Matsumoto, Japan. She had terrifying hallucinations, many of them, early in life that made living impossible. "Flames would rise up from the foam," she said of an experience that continued for years flowers would talk to her, and designs on a tablecloth would leap up and eat the walls, the floor, and her own body.
Refusing to let these impressions consume her, Kusama began to paint an enacting ten decade career that moved her from psychological nightmare to iconic modern art.
For Kusama, to cover everything in dots was an act of “self-obliterating,” which was a way of erasing the sense of self and immersing her into endless patterns and it was also a therapeutic way. Her vision quickly morphed into mirror lined rooms, soft sculptures and public happenings that questioned what was considered contemporary art. Though millions thought the artist’s career had ended when she voluntarily admitted herself to a Tokyo psychiatric hospital in 1977, the building became her 50 year creative sanctuary and engine.
From her studio just across the street, Kusama staged an extraordinary late career renaissance that brought millions to world museums with her colorful, dotted pumpkins and immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms, creating the world’s longest queues, early internet viral videos and a bridge between avant-garde art and high-end fashion. By exposing for the world to enter her internal dimension, the Queen of Dots re-invented modern culture and taught successive generations how to see infinite beauty, light and freedom.
