The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) was recently forced to open the spillway gates of the Khandong Hydro Electric Project Dam, Umrangso, located in Assam, due to the overflow and overfill of the water reservoir caused by the immense rainfall in Dima Hasao district and the neighboring state of Meghalaya.

The administration has taken all the necessary steps to spread awareness among the people and also maintained close watch on the situation. The Khandong dam had released about 157 Cumecs of water reserve through multiple gates, namely 1, 4, and 7, which is the main cause of the rapid flooding in lower zones. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued warnings to the low-level terrains and agricultural zones. People have been warned against bathing, fishing, and crossing the river at this time. The DDMA has also released an advisory on the safeguarding of local cattle and domestic animals.

The authorities have taken it upon themselves to provide all updates on the situation to people through mobile networks and local WhatsApp groups. The emergency has caused the blockage of State Highway 22 and the locking down the local educational institutions in an attempt to safeguard lives.
All residents have been requested to avoid any riverside activities for the time being and remain on high alert as the arriving monsoon can only worsen the current situation.
