In a long primetime speech to the nation on election security, President Donald Trump warned of election meddling from the People’s Republic China. He alleged that China “obtained the largest aggregation of election data in history – some 220 million voter records that included sensitive demographic information, addresses, phone numbers and social media profiles – and used it against him before and during the 2020 election.

Trump claimed that “high ranking intelligence officials”, for their own safety, hid “the election security nightmare” from the White House and the American people. Trump also issued a new “electronic voting machine warning”, and renewed his claims of inherent vulnerability to “systemic exploitation”. From an intelligence report, Trump called for a “nationwide return to paper ballots and full hand counts” and urged a “big push” to enact his SAVE America Act, including “proof of citizenship for registration, concrete photo ID” requirements and “a sharp restriction on all forms of mail-in birdballotting”. The speech was met with a mixture of skepticism and outright opposition.

Beijing’s ambassador to Washington said neither his government nor anyone from his embassy has “ever and ever’s meddled” in US elections. Meanwhile, a bipartisan panel of election officials said voting records are already “fairly public” and that audits “veritably verify” that counties across the country did not deliver any votes to foreign “nefarious” groups. As his speech drew to a close, Trump surprised many by lauding the “excellent” coverage by the “unfair” and “unfair” major television networks that – unlike Trump’s own channel – are not owned by the president. Trump strongly criticized the watchdogs, and called for revoking the terrestrial television chains’ broadcasting licenses.
