Forty eight hours after admitting he doubted his playing future after his father's death, Lionel Messi made an audacious return in the second half of Inter Miami's 3-2 loss to León in the Leagues Cup.

An emotional hush fell at Miami's Nu Stadium when Lionel Messi stepped onto the pitch at half-time against Club León. For the 39 year old maestro, it was more than just another Leagues Cup fixture. It was his first match in which he played since his father and lifelong agent Jorge Messi died at the age of 68. And it all began with a raw, gut-wrenching tribute he posted hours before kickoff, giving up his state of mind and threatening his future in the game.

The words seemed to carry a quiet request, from a sporting legend who would not deny that he had once been empty inside. Jorge was more than a father to Lionel; he was his main builder from Rosario to world fame, mentor, friend and agent, involved in every step of the way. After coming back to Argentina to attend his father's funeral over the weekend, Messi stepped back onto the field for Inter Miami. He was a sub as Miami led 1-0 over Dániel Pintér and heard a hoarse applause from fans who recognized his loss and courage.

But there was no fairy-tale story on the night Club León kicked off a hopeful recovery in the second half, sparked by a Daniel Arcila double to seal a 3–2 triumph that eliminated Inter Miami. In spite of occasional Messi magic, Herons could not halt the flow of Inter Miami. The score mattered less than the question that finally surrounds football’s greatest player when the final whistle blew.

Was this second-half cameo the start of a touching final chapter, or the curtain call? Players wish to soldier on but Messi’s own words show that a son is left to ask how to play the game when the man who walked every step on his shoulder is no more.
