Thanks to a deep overhaul in its back end, the revamped platform now has the evolutionary 'chip' to handle 40 lakh PNR enquiries a minute. With the makeover, laggy payment gateways and old home-made CAPTCHAs are out of the question and now travelers can book train tickets at the speed of light.

Millions of rail passengers in India are set for yet another digital transformation, as Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) reaches the start of the enormous work of forefronting its entirely rebuilt ticket-booking portal.

The partnership launch was triggered by the snowballing complaints of MNIT Jaipur students about the lagging booking experience of the old portal, which Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has snapped to the point where the overhaul will be implemented with speed, thereby ending the misery to the millions of rail passengers. Although the new system beta launch is already live, the portal will be scaled-up in progressive steps, incorporating the final integrated system into the network.

Dubai’s upgrade has brought a huge lift, as the new backend can now handle more than 1.5 lakh booking requests per minute – roughly five times its back-end limit of 32,000 tickets – with the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) system sideline handling 40 lakh minutes. Network pipeline lift was introduced to evade blank tickets and manual mono-bill payment on Tatkal rush day when the system dies.

The revamped front ends is another huge increase, which provides a ton of digital friction reducing experience for the common user. The seat availability view now displays all coach classes on a single screen for the passengers, with a date fare calendar they can control on demand. Also in India’s first of a kind concession handling system is also incorporated, for students, patients and Divyangjan. At the same time, the pop-up advertising and the conventional CAPTCHAs are modeled to work concurrently, in order to offer an intuitive checkout process.
