MOUNT FUJI -Safety officials, local authorities, and climbers are calling for sweeping changes to the rules governing family climbing on Japan’s highest peak after a painful incident that involved a father abandoning his exhausted son at 2,500 meters and forcing the young boy to wait for eight hours at the base of the mountain before he left the child behind.

The disoriented child, left alone in thick fog and dropping temperatures at a high altitude, was eventually found by careful staff of a nearby mountain hut. The station workers protected the boy, fed him hot food and called for local emergency services. The child was saved from physical injury but the incident has promised to shake the protocols for child safety in the mountains and outraged the Japanese public.

Mount Fuji authorities currently emit vivid warnings about the importance of proper gear, preparation and supervision by adults. Unfortunately, they have no legal authority to prevent unprepared families from entering the mountain, or enforce hard, age related safety precautions on the ridge. Regular alpine guides assert that novices whether local or foreign tend to buoy beneath the seriousness of this volcano's environment, where the perils of altitude sickness, grave hypothermia and steep cliffs can become mortal to the bodily development of little ones.

Landscape officials and mountain rescue crews have called for binding policy changes in the wake of scandal. Checkpoint screenings at trailheads to see what people are carrying, clear legal duty of parents to see their children at all times and permission for station rangers to turn arbitrary families back are some of the measures that could put child safety before ambition as thousands head to the iconic Japanese volcano every summer.
