Recently the Nepal flash floods have caused great damage to the region and the overflowing river is now potentially a threat to the lower based regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

In the Rasuwa district of Nepal a grave incident of Glacial lake outburst due to excessive rainfall and environmental reasons had caused the rapid rise in the regional rivers, the incident had led to the death of around 90 people confirmed and the disappearance of 400 tourists out of which 105 are said to be Indian and major infrastructure damage to bridges and anything that falls on the river path.

The incident occurred approx. 200 km north to Indian border with Nepal and has caused the disastrous water level rise of River Ghaghara and Rapti. Many other regional rivers such as Gandak and Bhote Koshi face the same consequence which raises concerns for the lives of people situated in parts that border with Nepal. The National Disaster Response force (NDRF) and Central Water Committee (CWC) has released advisory to states: Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and asked people to be alert and shift to safer, high landed regions.

The NDRF and SDRF have been allocated to provide service to the regions of Bihar especially as the river basins covers most of lower regions of Bihar like West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sapaul and Muzaffarpur. The professional teams are directed to evacuate people to safe areas as soon as possible. The Chief Minister of Bihar, Samrat Choudhary has ensured the people that a high committee is formed to keep a close watch 24/7 on the river flooding threats. The Home Minister, Amit Shah too has said to deploy proper rescue and disaster response teams to the Bihar region.

The barrage in charge Iqbal Anwar of Valmiki Nagar Barrage (Gandak river) in Bihar has claimed that the water level increase can triple-fold by the next few days and that they had currently discharges around 1.06 lakh cusecs of water as the barrage had overflown; although the amount can increase to 3 Lakh cusecs in around 5-6 hours only. The authorities show high risk to the lower regions and ask people to co-operate with the response forces and move away from river basin regions.
