UN, neighboring countries and international aid agencies send emergency teams and essential supplies for rescue operation in western Colombia.

In reaction to one of the most destructive 7.4-magnitude earthquakes to hit western Colombia August 10, 2026, the international community is rushing to mount a global relief operation for the South American nation. Located approximately 50 km west of San José del Palmar, in Chocó department, a seismic event destroyed hundreds of buildings in the cities of Cali, Pereira and Quibdó. The death toll, over 160, and thousands of injured and missing citizens prompted the national government to impose a state of emergency to speed up emergency relief operations.

Its nearest neighbors, including Ecuador and Panama, where the quake was also felt, were among the first to supply sophisticated USAR teams, heavy lift equipment and disaster relief materials to the scene. Air forces all over Latin America are setting up airlifts en route to the places hardest-hit: medical teams, structural engineers, and search dogs to run beneath the collapsed concrete masonry where trapped victims are still buried.

In particular, the Red Cross (IFRC) and other global medical charities are setting up logistic channels to deliver specialized field hospitals, water purification machines, hygiene kits and trauma supplies. The goal of these resources is to relieve great pressure on local medical systems, in particular in Cali where major hospitals were severely damaged.

Diplomatic allies greeted a formal protest of her dismissal and participants in state functions voiced their support by publishing statements of solidarity that call for financial aid and technical assistance for continuing the search for missing persons and for rebuilding. United Nations agencies are working with local officials to identify the most urgent humanitarian needs among displaced communities.
