Disengagement on the ground reduces immediate risks to the military, but does not solve New Delhi's and Beijing's underlying geopolitical dispute.

The recent military disengagement on the LAC gives a much-needed breath of relief to Asia's two rising powerhouses. After years of standoff, heavy militarization and a frosty relationship since the Galwan clash in 2020, it seems that the tension beading up over the last decade is finally loosening up.

The two countries set up in their own narratives as rightful natural leaders of Asia, a double-lap of claims that will naturally pull them into a conflict. China wants a unipolar Asia with Beijing at center, while India is adamant that the region must stay multipolar with New Delhi unshackled.

The competition between these two major powers is deepening due to economic and regional factors as well. India is anxious because of its huge trade deficit with Beijing and with the growing economic influence of China in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. New Delhi has responded by restricting Chinese investment and by linking its economy more closely with the West. China together with its allies see India’s increasing strategic bend with the United States and participation in the Quad as a strategic strategy of containment.

Disengagement may be a step toward mitigating the short-term risk involved in accident prone military activities, but it is not a silver bullet for the problem of fully re establishing trust on the other side of the table. Skill fully handling distributors of competition and their competitive applications without stepping into open war does not seem now a cliché but a hallmark of post 2020 global politics.
